SYSTEM OF A DOWN vocalist Serj Tankian launched his own website on Sunday, April 1 -- serjicalstrike.com -- specifically "to introduce words and music that have been otherwise unavailable in stores," according to the singer. The first project available at serjicalstrike.com will be Serj's self-published poetry book, Cool Gardens, 96-pages of very personal reflections and considerations that give the reader a glimpse into Serj's life and thoughts over the past seven or eight years. Cool Gardens is available now and is priced at $15.00. “I chose to title it Cool Gardens,” explained Serj, "because I love the thought of spending my life walking around surrounded by Cool gardens. When I think of that term, it relaxes me." Nearly half of the tome is original artwork created by Sako Shahinian, a young L.A.-based artist. Topics include a mix of spiritual, political, and humorous. Serj plans an initial run of 5,000 copies, with the first 500 personally signed by the singer. CDs by three of Serj's favorite unknown bands will also be available on the site in the coming weeks: BAD ACID TRIP, "One of the best undiscovered secrets from L.A.'s thrash/punk scene. Their name says it all;" KITTENS FOR CHRISTIAN, "I often describe them as SONIC YOUTH meets JESUS LIZARD or the BIRTHDAY PARTY. They're very interesting and drivy;" and BIG ELF, "The best progressive classic rock band of this era. Amazing songwriting, arranging, and harmonies."
SYSTEM OF A DOWN and producer Rick Rubin entered a Los Angeles studio to record one of the most highly-anticipated albums of this year—the follow-up to the group’s self-titled debut album which was released in 1998 on the Sony-distributed American Recordings label. Fueled by near non-stop touring and the radio hit “Sugar,” “System of a Down” has sold in excess of 850,000 copies worldwide. System of a Down—Serj Tankian/vocals, Daron Malakian/guitars, Shavo Odadjian/bass, John Dolmayan/drums have been holed up in a rehearsal studio since last October, taking only a short break to play a special benefit show in November to shed more light on the issue of the Armenian Genocide. The band has been spending five to six hours every night writing and rehearsing some 25 new songs, all of which will be recorded, some of which will make it to the CD’s final track listing. No one knows yet what songs will end up on the final album, and the songs that the band plan to record still have only working titles. Nonetheless, the subject matter and lyrical content of the new album will run the gamut from the U.S. prison system (“Prison Song”) to a song about groupies (“Psycho”), to an ode to pajamas (“P.J.s”), to the talking car in the Œ80s TV show, “Knight Rider” (“K.I.T.T.”). The new System of a Down CD, as yet untitled, is expected to be released this summer.
